2015 Elections: HDI, Others campaigns against Hate Speech

As part of events carried out to educate the electorate in the on-going 2015 General Elections, a tweet session has been organised to sensitize the public on the danger of spreading hate speech before, during and after the elections.

The session, which was a joint programme of Human Development Initiative (HDI), Media Rights Agenda (MRA), Centre for Social Justice (CSJ), Community Life Project (CLP), was part of the Stop Impunity Nigeria (S.I.N) Campaign, which started since 2013.

Using Sections 95-102 of the Electoral Act, the tweeting session was held to create awareness for the public on what constitutes hate speech and also to dissuade politicians from heating up the polity with such campaigns.

With the hashtag, #StopHateSpeech, different individuals and organisations across the country participated in the session through tweets, retweets and replies culminating into over 700,000 impressions.

Prominent media players who participated in the session include veteran broadcaster and General Manager, Radio One, Mrs. Funke Treasure Durodola and the Online Editor of The Nation Newspaper, Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin.
