Science Teachers of Visually Impaired Schools Trained for Better Service Delivery

On the 24th of May 2019, Human Development Initiatives in collaboration with Science and Technology for Nigeria Persons with Special Needs Initiatives organized a one-day training for Mathematics and Science subject teachers of pupils with visual impairment in Lagos State. The training was well attended. Stakeholders present at the meeting include but not limited to, the Ministry of Education, State Universal Basic Education, Board (SUBEB), and visual impaired students from Queens College, teachers from private and public schools

The Workshop followed thereafter, and was facilitated by Dr. Sariat Adelabu. She delivered a detailed presentation on the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) KIT: A tactile adaptations kit with materials of varying textures that can be used to depict any visual item, especially for students who are blind or visually impaired.  This was followed by a demonstration session where she made the 4 visually impaired students of Queens College use parts of the Kit. The highlight of the session, which caught everyone’s attention, was when she taught the visually impaired students how to plot a graph. They grasped easily and almost immediately, and were able to do so independently after being given an equation. 

A closing remark was given by the E.D HDI. Mrs. Olufunso Owasanoye, who urged teachers to impart the knowledge gained from the workshop to other teachers. She also advocated for incentives and resources for teachers who teach children living with disabilities.
