INTERNATIONAL WIDOWS’ DAY: HDI SUPPORT 200 WIDOWS WITH PALLIATIVE

The International Widows’ Day is celebrated yearly on the 23rd of June; the theme for this year is “I am Generation Equality: Realizing Women’s Rights.” To celebrate with widows, the Human Development Initiatives (HDI) organised her annual program tagged “A Day Out with Widows”. Given the current pandemic, this year’s widows’ day program was celebrated in accordance with government COVID-19 guideline; the widows were divided into groups to observe physical distancing and attended to in batches.

The organisation gave out food items and household materials to 200 widows, the Executive Director in her address reassured widows that HDI will always defend widows and the less privileged in the society. She encouraged the widows to always rejoice and place their hope in God; also, while also, demanding for their rights with their heads raised up.

One of the beneficiaries Mrs Ekaite Inkamiang explained that she became a widow 33 years ago and that she knew about HDI 20 years ago. She noted that the organization helped her with free legal service when she had issue with her landlord some years ago and that the organization has taken her as a family member.  She also thanked HDI for always celebrating widows every June 23 which is the day set aside for celebrating widows.

Another widow, Mrs Adetohun Osidele expressed her appreciation to HDI for always helping widows all year round. She said HDI gave her a source of livelihood through a vocational training program the organisation organised. She pleaded with the government to support HDI’s effort to reach more vulnerable widows in the society. At the end of the event, beneficiaries showed their gratitude to the organisation.
