HDI NIGERIA AND ACTIONAID NIGERIA SUPPORTED 673 INDIGENT GIRLS WITH TRANSISTOR RADIO TO CONTINUE LEARNING FROM HOME
| To ensure that girls in rural communities who have no access to e-learning gadget continue to learn during this pandemic, Human Development Initiatives (HDI) and ActionAid Nigeria distributed hand-held radios and batteries to members of Safe Space Girls Club in Alimosho, Epe and Badagry LGAs. Mr. Samuel Ajayi, the program officer in charge of the Breaking Barriers project made it known that learning during this period of COVID-19 has been challenging for children especially those in the rural areas. Children who are indigent cannot access internet, television, electricity, or android phones that can enable them to continue learning from home. Therefore, it became necessary for HDI and ActionAid Nigeria to support these indigent children especially girls to continue learning from home. We had a consultation with our project school facilitators to know what we can do to ensure students continue learning. Since Lagos State has been running on-air classes on radios, this informed our decision to support members of the safe space girls club with hand-held radio. We work in 3 local government and 5 schools in each LGA, we targeted 47 beneficiaries in each school so we gave out a total of 673 transistor radios. Throughout the distribution process we adhered to all COVID-19 guidelines. The transistor radio has inbuilt batteries that will enable the student to participate in the on-air classes even when there is no electricity. To ensure that there is impact, we also engaged their parents on why we are giving their wards the transistor radios, for them to serve as first monitor and ensure their children participate in the on-air classes. A follow up mechanism has been put in place through their teachers, they all agreed to pay unexpected visit to their students’ home to monitor the usage of the radio. We have also developed a tool to track the usage of the transistor radio. Parent and student appreciated the HDI and ActionAid Nigeria for reaching out to them. |
